Building your own brand vs distributing others: lessons from doing both

We operate owned brands and distribute international ones. Here's what each model teaches you — and why the combination wins.

Ghori Trading does both: we build owned brands — Green Wealth, Oryss Prive, Sublimizhair and others — and we distribute international brands across the GCC. Running both models side by side teaches lessons that neither can teach alone.

What owned brands teach you

Building your own brand forces you to understand the full P&L: product development, registration, marketing spend, pricing architecture and the true cost of every channel. When we sit across from an international principal, we've made every mistake they're worried about — with our own money.

What distribution teaches you

Distributing established brands teaches discipline: service levels, buyer relationships, trade terms, and the humility of representing someone else's equity. It also builds the infrastructure — warehouse, fleet, sales team, retail relationships — that owned brands then plug into.

Why the combination is stronger

The owned brands make us a smarter distributor; the distribution business makes our owned brands stronger operators. Retailers take our calls because we bring them a portfolio. Principals trust us because we've sat in their chair. And every channel relationship serves twice.

The honest trade-offs

Owned brands demand patient capital — marketing spend comes years before payback. Distribution generates faster cash but thinner margins. A portfolio needs both, and the discipline to never let a distributed brand compete unfairly with an owned one. Category clarity at the portfolio level is what makes the model work.
